We tend to think that we're most productive when we're "on task." We're skipping lunch to tick one more thing off our list. We cut to the chase at the start of a meeting rather than taking a few minutes to chat with our colleagues about their plans for the weekend. But the truth is that we are much more productive and happier! if we allow ourselves to rest between efforts.

Working in a fast-paced, technology-driven culture, we sometimes forget that we are humans, not computers.

As in other animals, our brainwave patterns move in ultradian rhythms. . Every few hours we experience a significant "ultrasound drop" as our energy drops. As we work our way through these slumps, relying on caffeine, adrenaline, and stress hormones to keep us awake instead of letting our bodies and brains rest, we become stressed and jittery, and our ability to perform and our well-being decline.

But people who take a break every 90 minutes report 30% more focus than those who take no or only one break throughout the day. In addition, they have a 50% greater ability to think creatively and some level of health and wellbeing.
